One of the most ignored parts of Manali-Kaza road is this particular stretch, where Chandra river meanders into the steeper slopes of Lahaul valley, with stretches of CB range flanking one side of the valley, while the other side is dominated by a magnificent view of Himachal's largest glacier, Bada Shigri.
This view point is about 15-20 mins before Batal settlement, and everyone just gives it a miss, without noticing this massive glacier coming down the mountain.
I never bothered about it much, specially during my first journey on this stretch because it is easy to miss if you're coming from Manali, but on my first return from Kaza to Manali in September 2016, I made a mental note about this glacier and later checked for it on the trekking maps of Indian Himalayas, and later compared it with some images on Google, and realised that what one gets to see at this point is one of the biggest glaciers in the country.
Later on, during each of my trips between Manali to Kaza, I've made sure to educate all the fellow travellers about this glacier.
For this is what travelling is for me, it's this intense desire to explore and know more about the world around me, to not miss what seems magnificent, to forge friendships with these mountains, and learn more about them, their names and their stories.
So if you're on Manali-Kaza stretch the next time, do look out for this glacier, and if you spot it, get down your vehicle and experience the immense beauty of this nature's marvel.
Girl, you know I want your love.
Your flavour was handmade for somebody like me.
Come on now follow my lead. I may be hungry, don’t mind me.
Said boy, let’s not talk too much, grab on my crust and put that mouth around me.
Come on now follow my lead, come on now follow my lead. Mmmm.
