The Warrnambool team enjoyed a great Spring day at the beach on Sunday. It was a productive day, as the team of over 60 volunteers removed 125kg of rubbish. This was a return visit for the team, the Main Beach being the location of a previous clean-up. Unfortunately the amount of rubbish picked up was still significant.
The main offending items were:
Approx. 250 cigarette butts
233 plastic lids and tops
Over 1000 plastic bags (supermarket, garbage, dog poo)
240 items of plastic packaging
257 pieces of rope and net scraps
Over 2000 pieces of hard plastic
Over 1300 plastic remnants/pieces of bags
142 aluminium cans
162 glass bottles
197 plastic bottles
112 foam cups/packs/trays
42 Straws and confection sticks
Super effort from the team - so much plastic removed.
Many items collected should be recycled. If Victoria had a container deposit scheme, we know we would not be picking up so many cans and bottles.
Likewise if plastic bags were banned, we would not be constantly picking up bags or remnants of plastic bags.
