I... The very first thing "I" promised myself as I became an adult and then a parent ➰ was that I would do everything possible so that my kids never went hungry. 〰 • Hunger is embarrassing. It is embarrassing for the parent to admit they're hard work is not enough. It is embarrassing for the child to admit they're hungry- even if their stomach growls and snitches on them. 〰 • Growing up in a Latino household, raised by a widow, you learn that pride is very important and that family issues do not leave those four walls. 〰 • So much so, my own family may have had a glimpse of how I grew up- but until this day, I've never told anyone but my husband. 〰 • Too proud for "hand-out's," too proud for food stamps, too proud for Medicare. Too proud to admit that she was a very strong and capable woman who needed a helping hand. 〰 • My mother worked two jobs outside our home, as well as, odd jobs for our neighbors. She made "cantina" for many, ironed business shirts for others and sold her family recipe homemade "nacatamales" and "tres leches" to make ends meet without any government assistance. 〰 • Some say I get my strength from her. I don't doubt it for a second. 〰 • Through it all, there were rough moments that I recollect so vividly- it can conjure the pain, embarrassment and compassion I felt then. 〰 • I had compassion for Her. I can't begin to imagine how helpless and out of control she felt at those hungry times. 〰 • So, nowadays as a Mother myself, I always make sure my children eat well and plenty. 〰 • Trust that when there's been any bumps, I did what I had to, too. I'm a SAHM now because of all the hard work hubby and I put in together to be able to be one. 〰 • I am sharing a small piece of me, not for sympathy, empathy or conversation. 〰〰 • I am sharing because "I" was one of those six kids who counted on school meals and no one knew. 〰 • Share the summer meals ph# & donate what you can. Because you just never truly know. 〰 • Go ahead, click LINK IN BIO to learn more and how you can have your contribution matched NOW through Monday, July 31st. 〰 • All Images, trademarks and likeness of NKH belong to NKH and their perspective owners.
