1 otter, 2 otters, 3 otters..........2,058 otters!
Each year, staff from the Seattle Aquarium participates in the Washington State sea otter survey and counts otters living along the outer coast from Neah Bay to the Hoh River. In 2017, 2058 sea otters were counted! A big change from 100 years ago when the entire WA state sea otter population was eradicated as a result of the fur trade. The sea otters that thrive along our coast today are decedents of a few dozen sea otters that survived after being transplanted here from Alaska in 1969 and 1970.
