I’m thankful that I’ve been able to take a good handful of mother-daughter trips in the wilderness so far this Summer with my girl Belle. One thing I never really want it to feel like is that I’m dragging her along with me, and it doesn’t seem like it’s gotten quite to that point yet. While out hiking at Mount Rainier recently, she actually said that she really wants to backpack/hike the Wonderland Trail next year, which kind of blew me away. For those of you who aren’t aware, it’s 93 miles long and encircles the entire mountain. She certainly has determination and seemingly no fear of anything...I’ll give her that. 💙 Next weekend will be a bit bittersweet. It’s the last trip before school starts where we will be backpacking in the North Cascades. Really excited to show her the rugged and remote beauty of that area, and hopefully she will be in complete awe as I was the first time.
Here’s an image from this past Spring during a trip along the Oregon Coast. We were lucky enough to have this spot to ourselves the entire evening and the conditions were pretty perfect. I will be co-leading another Oregon coast workshop with the very talented @hillary_younger next May 2019 if you’re interested in joining along in the adventure. The Orangutan, old man of the forest, an inhabitant of the rich tropical forests and an endangered victim of the Palm Oil industry. These magnificent creatures have been facing extinction at the hands of deforestation in the name of industry for decades. 💪🏻Exercise and mental health!
Physical activity has a huge potential to enhance our wellbeing. Even a short burst of 10 minutes’ brisk walking increases our mental alertness, energy and positive mood.
1️⃣Improves your mood.
Physical activity has been shown to have a positive impact on our mood. A study asked people to rate their mood immediately after periods of physical activity (e.g. going for a walk or doing housework), and periods of inactivity (e.g. reading a book or watching television). Researchers found that the participants felt more content, more awake and calmer after being physically active compared to after periods of inactivity.
2️⃣Reduces your stress levels.
The most common physical signs of stress include sleeping problems, sweating, and loss of appetite. Symptoms like these are triggered by a rush of stress hormones in our body – otherwise known as the ‘fight or flight’ response. Physical exercise can be very effective in relieving stress. Research on employed adults has found that highly active individuals tend to have lower stress rates compared to individuals who are less active.
3️⃣Impacts depression and anxiety.
Physical activity can be an alternative treatment for depression. It can be used as a standalone treatment or in combination with medication and/or psychological therapy. Physical activity can reduce levels of anxiety in people with mild symptoms and may also be helpful for treating clinical anxiety.

I was one of those fearful kids!! It was fear that stopped me from doing so many things that I really wanted to do. ❕
Still, even today I am afraid, I just have to in spite of my fears, move past it. Often times after doing something that scares me, I realized it wasn’t that scary after all & I’m no longer scared of it. There are other times that I face my fear, realize it wasn’t that scary, stop doing it “get out of practice” and I become scared of the same thing again. ❔
Strange- being out of practice with a fear I thought I conquered,I become fearful again. 💡
This must mean only 1 thing: I must constantly push myself past my fears, it is a life long practice.
