Our past meets the present in a lot of ways. From old triggers to old patterns - we are always meeting old parts of ourselves and the stories/emotions they hold.
How we meet these parts of ourselves will determine how long they live. Last night, I was having a fully body response to a trigger — so I got curious, and asked myself, “alright, what’s coming up for you?! What’s the story? The emotion?” This self-soothing helps calm the nervous system in these times, so we don’t project the past onto the present and overlay old wounds on new people & situations.
Don’t get me wrong, this will happen too. At first, I retreated and responded in a way that I would’ve always had in the past. Shut down. Withdraw. Build a strong case and a bigger wall.
But in those following moments I met a choice point where I had a moment to lean in, soften, and bring it forward. Soooo I did. And that part of me was met with love, reassurance, and acknowledgement. So today, that part of me doesn’t live in the space between my head and my heart anymore, it lives in my heart — where it is held, met, and integrated into a felt sense of safety.
How you meet these parts, will determine how it shows up. Soften, dear one — all of you is welcome in the present. #beingisbeautiful
