Excited to be heading back to the Great Barrier Reef this coming Friday with @gbrlegacy. Quite a few years have passed since my last trip to the reef in July 2011. This time round, I'll be joining skipper John Rumney, Director of science and media Dr Dean Miller and the ‘Godfather of Coral’ Dr Charlie Veron as part of an expedition to the remote northern Great Barrier Reef.
Great Barrier Reef Legacy aims to foster a culture of partnerships - between scientists, educators, media outlets and the public, to encourage all stakeholders involved in the @gbrmarinepark to combine their resources and work together instead of apart.
This expedition, "Search For Solutions" is funded by private and corporate sponsors and hundreds of volunteer hours. It’s a unique operational model that has been designed for maximum collective benefit - to provide cost-effective access to researchers, educators and communicators and to use these assets to amplify the reach of the important scientific work that is being done. By sharing news of discoveries and setbacks with a global audience they hope to start closing the gap between the issues facing the reef and the knowledge and engagement of the general public.
I sincerely hope you will join us on this amazing journey! I'll be posting regular updates from Friday over the week on the Australian Geographic instagram account, as well as my own - in the meantime, please follow @gbrlegacy and @australiangeographic - fingers crossed for a productive expedition, I simply can’t wait to cast my eyes (and lens) on the reef again!
