Katsuna as a Taisho Era ‘new woman’ (Mark1 versions): I was finally able to proceed with a project that has been on my mind for some years. Katsuna made her erikae last year and has a sort of timeless quality that seemed perfect for this kind of project.
Taishō era, is a period in the history of Japan dating from July 30, 1912, to December 25, 1926, coinciding with the reign of the Emperor Taishō. Katsuna is a geiko from Kamishichiken in Kyoto who made her erikae last year directly as a Jikata.
After a test shooting in February we were able to go ahead with a full day this May. She is certainly a pleasure to work with and can portray the sort of feeling I look for. (I will talk another time about how traditional dance can strengthen the capacity to go to the essence of a role as an actor/model)
This kind of shoot takes a lot of preparation and help. With some very generous help we were able to source an antique kimono and other accessories and to style her hair appropriately. We also found some good locations after some early disappointments.
These images are actually very early drafts in terms of post processing. People often ask me ‘where are the shots?’ from a certain trip or project shoot, but the truth is, it can take me weeks (sometimes), months (usually) and sometimes years to work my way through possibilities, get clear about the overall look that works best and polish the image. If it is to be an exhibition print then it will likely be test printed at least ten times or more as we find changes that take it a little further or stronger, as well as find the paper that suits the work. You have to put it on the wall and live with it to see how far there is still to go.
Still, here are the first versions.
There is a behind the scenes video over on my Facebook page: robertvankoesveldphotography. You can follow my FB page or, better still, follow the link to join my mailing list to keep up to date with photo tours and exhibitions.
