BAUDELAIRE = SONNE+FLEISCH 🌒
last night I understood a lot about charles baudelaire. contrary to most scholars I have always had the feeling that there is a strong implicit political dimension to the symbolist-decadent turning away from the world and complete immersion into aesthetics. .
in yesterday’s symposium i learned about his explicit politic mind and his analytical approach to thing: he saw revolutionary potential only in the structured, organized protest (and therefor in the end favoured wine over haschisch) and contrary to most smug artist of his time he understood that art is not excluded from (but depending on) our social and economic conditions: to baudelaire, the mainly bourgeois book market was not solely a social malady but also a chance to educate the bourgeoisie and to slowly wake its revolutionary potential.
he emphasized the aspects of work and analysis in the production of art and thereby restored the artists political sphere by clearing the romantic fog around artistic creation (ingenuity, inspiratoin, solitude of the genius, superiority of the art,…), which had earlier marginalized and depoliticized the artist.
(„oh that nice little artist doing all his crazy artsy stuff, lets throw some compliments or money on him, and then continue our day“ - and give him a marginal place in society where he can rage tightly-controlled but will never reach structural, systemic change.) change will come if we follow baudelaire: „All of us have the republican spirit in our blood, just as we have syphilis in our bones. We have a democratic and syphilitic infection“
we will honour this great and inspiring artist with a cool project soon! #syphilisvienna
