The art of Japanese lacquerware in Kiso 木曽の漆器職人
The lacquer brushed onto the wood is a natural material made from tree resin and lacquer brushes are made with human hair instead of animal hair (and cost $700 and up!). Each piece gets 10-15 coats and must be brushed and dried in a room without any breeze. Any pieces of dust that land on the wet lacquer are carefully picked off with the quill of a feather. Wow.
