CHECK YOUR ELBOW POSITION IN THE PRESS
First, sorry if my voice sounds a bit weird today. I've been fighting off a fever and head cold for a couple days and was trying to make it through this without my lungs giving out. 😅
💥 If you ask what injury people are most worried about in the bench press, most will tell you the shoulder. As a byproduct of this, people will often avoid flaring the elbows out due to not wanting to stress the shoulder too much, and actually end up over tucking. This is especially common in people first learning the movement.
When we over tuck though, we shift that stress to the elbow. What happens is that you end up pushing the elbows forward in front of the bar and creating a longer joint lever there, and therefore increasing the amount of work the tricep has to do out of the bottom.
👍🏻 A good rule of thumb is to flare the elbows out somewhere around 45 to 60 degrees in the bench press and to get the elbow lined up relatively underneath the bar. This will have benefits to performance as well as more evenly distribute the stress of the movement across all the muscles and joints involved.
