Thank you so much !
Trying a new thing! Every week on Sunday, I’m gonna post here and tell you where I’m teaching the following week. This includes my schedule at @youryogamn, which, as many of you know, changes week to week. And, if I’m feeling particularly put together, I think I’ll tell you what my theme for the week will be:
This week you can find me:
Tuesday: 7:30pm for Free Yoga Northeast at Northeast Park
Wednesday: 7:30pm at @youryogamn
Sunday: 12pm at @youryogamn
These are all drop-in classes so mark your calendars and set aside some time for yourself. If you’ve never been to Your Yoga before, your first week of classes is only $10! 📷@thericheproject
In the last month, I’ve had two major opportunities to get to know new people and to connect.
It has been beautiful, heart expanding, adventurous, hilarious and so so joyful 🌿 however, at the same time, it’s been very challenging.
I would like to think I’m a very warm, friendly person. I’ve always made friends easily, but I’ve always felt like I couldn’t connect deeper with others - like there was something wrong with me or some major organ or part of my brain missing that everyone else had that helped them form those friendships and connections that I always craved.
Some of the script that was and has been running through my head when meeting new people over the last month has been:
“You’re not worth the effort to get to know”
“No one really likes you“
“No one cares about you”
“No one would notice if you’re here or not”
“No one is interested in getting to know you”
“What you have to say isn’t worth people’s time to listen”
The more I listened to these voices, the more I shut off and the harder it was to open up to others and connect on more than just a surface level.
And it only recently occurred to me that if I leaned back, it’s harder for others to lean in.
So I began to set myself small, bite sized challenges. Things that might seem so simple and easy for others, but felt so foreign to this gal. Literally one of them being giving someone a hug if they hadn’t previously given me a hug first. Like I’m talking supperrrr simple shit #keepitsimplestupid
And look, it’s a work in progress. And I’m acutely aware of who is not worth that energy and effort - and I’m proud that I’m leaning to discern that.
But it was crazy that when I opened up about these thoughts the response was of pure love, kindness, compassion and a hell of a lot of “omg, me too” 🌸
In such a short space of time, I feel I’ve connected deeper than I ever have before. More so than I ever thought was possible for me. And I wasn’t missing an organ or a part of my brain - I was just my own biggest barrier.
So my challenge to myself (and I invite you along if you’re feeling the calling to) is to investigate those little voices, step out of your own way and continue to lean in ✨
Progress in forearm hollowback. ♥️ This has become one of my favorite poses - I’ve been playing with so many different variations lately that are new to me. There are significant anatomical differences between the two poses. I think the most obvious is my shoulders and the position of my arms. There is a lot more space and opening today. The palms in prayer creates a slight external shoulder rotation which allows me to push my chest out further. This shifts my center of gravity and compensates for the weight of my legs, making the shape sustainable and comfortable in my body. What you can’t see here - and easily the biggest transformation for me - is the fear I had in 2015 isn’t there today. This pose used to terrify me. Once I learned a safe exit strategy, the fear dissipated and I began to practice it more often. With consistent practice, my shoulders have opened up. My core is stronger and my breath more steady. It feels better physically now than it did then. The depth wasn’t the goal, there was no goal other than to move in a way that is safe in my body. This takes time and patience. Take a path without seeking a destination and you never know where you’ll end up. ♥️ Wearing @aloyoga on the right. 😊 #transformationtuesday#yoga#progress#progressnotperfection#practice#practicedaily#practicenotperfection#stronger#flexible#yogateacher#yogastudent#alwayslearning#inspired#asana#namaste
It feels good to be back in the rhythm of routine of life. It almost feels like back to school, only I get to learn at my own pace and there aren’t any tests to take and whatever I manage learn is just improving my practice and teaching and comes from a place of general and genuine interest.
“I want to make the world a more empathetic place. I'd love to have a hand in cultivating kindness, compassion, and acceptance of our fellow humans.”-Melissa Smith
EYS is proud to include Melissa Smith as a co-lead for the 200hr Yoga Teacher Training this year! Melissa is an integral part of the Tulsa yoga community – and beyond. She is also part of the EYS mentoring program and is Executive Director of the @atticconversationsyoga. This weekend wraps up #2 in the books for our 2018/2019 200hrYTT. And a new blog post is up on everyoneyogaschool.com about this amazing yogini!
Why are you drawn to be involved with EYS?
“I feel Everyone Yoga School gives a great education in the ancient roots of yoga, as well as how to be a successful teacher in our modern age. Teacher trainees are given a great introduction to yoga philosophy as well as how to lead a safe and effective public class. One thing I really appreciate about the EYS model is that it is not just asana (or poses). Mudra, mantra, meditation, and movement are all taught to give the teacher trainees a well-rounded tool box to pull from, for their personal practice or their teaching practice...”
I'm supporting my friend Toonie for this challenge 😘 she has been working so hard to get what she loves. She's amazing 😘
