Recently, an IG follower asked us about the Syllabus Queen tradition at NU. For many years, NU's annual Syllabus yearbook included a beauty pageant, the winner of which was crowned the Syllabus Queen at the junior prom. In 1946, Patricia Neal (center), perhaps our most famous Syllabus Queen, beat out 35 other contestants for the post. School of Speech (now School of Communication) class of 1948, Neal was chosen for her beauty and poise, and was described as "quite cosmopolitan." She also served as district representative on the Wildcat Council and was a Pi Phi. After graduation, she enjoyed a rewarding career, acting in The Day The Earth Stood Still, Breakfast and Tiffany's, and Hud (for which she won an Academy Award).
