Leopards are my favorite big cat species.
This leopard was photographed in the Okavango Delta in Botswana. Leopards are small by big cat standards, and females weigh approximately 80 pounds, males weigh approximately 130 pounds. They are powerful, fast and excellent hunters. And amazingly beautiful.
There is no exact way of knowing how many African leopards are left. They are shy and cunning and hide easily in their environment, therefore an accurate count cannot be made. Estimates range in the area of 25,000 left on the African continent. The poaching of leopards is prominent given their beauty, and their skin is desired in many places in the world, and leopard parts are sold in various Asian countries as they feel they have medicinal powers. Therefore conservation is critical for the species as well as anti-poaching strategies. Please help save this species which is beautiful beyond imagination.
