Augur and Italian Sparrow
The ancient world was a world in constant flux, a world of oracles and signs that could be read, understood, and, in theory, controlled—at least in part.
It can be difficult for some of us to imagine a life where the natural world itself was inseparable from religion, easier for others. But in a universe ruled by the arbitrary whims of Gods and unknown machinations that may have seemed random but were ultimately made with intent—we can understand why the ancient Romans put so much credence in the odd practice of augury, of divining the future through bird-watching.
Augurs were consulted for every occasion—from weddings to war to whatever decision perplexed the ancient mind. Augurs themselves were present to initiate ceremonies of significance; the source, of course, for our word “inaugurate”. The symbols and methods of divining via the birds was subjective by nature. Rome was founded over the legendary twins squabbling over which bird omen portended the right to found the city where they pleased. Was it who saw the birds first, or who saw more? Spoiler alert: that debate wasn’t settled objectively. How, you might ask, did such an arbitrary-seeming practice form the backbone of Roman decision-making?
Flipping a coin to arbitrate a split decision is devoid of meaning, no? And any decision mulled over for days, weeks, years may have seemed in hindsight as if you “just knew it was right”. How many decisions made via augury were self-fulfilling prophecies? As many as you might think. As many still do today, the ancients surrendered to something higher to imbue them with the conviction to follow through. Perhaps the best way to think of augury is as any other system to help the individual subdue the constant chaos inherent in the universe around you, as any good and true religion reliably does.
