You guys! Look what I found at the beach house we're staying at this weekend! Looks like we'll have to make a satellite Whiskey and Vinyl night tonight. (Sorry @michaelrmoy I can't bring any of them home. 😢)
I’ve been so busy with guitar projects the last few years, I haven’t touched the pedal steel in a while, I feel like I forgot most of my licks and the technical side of the instrument. But lately I’m getting the steel bug back a bit, so here I’m starting at the beginning, with a famous solo all pedal steel players should tackle when they are learning – “Together Again” played by Tom Brumley with Buck Owens in the ‘60s. I think I’m gonna bring the steel out tonight for the first time in a long time to Simon’s Tavern with The Western Elstons and see how confused I can make myself! 8:30-11pm #pedalsteel#emmons#buckowens#togetheragain#steelguitar#classiccountry#guitarvideo
TBT episode 3
BB and Buck
The first time I saw BB king was the week Stevie Ray Vaughn died. He dedicated Guess Who to him. Everybody in the room was crying. There I was front row with my brother. We were so close we could hear his natural voice over the P.A. It was a life changing experience. A few years later I was playing the Buck Owens Crystal Palace. It was an honor as I learned how to be an entertainer from him. One night a guy walks up and hands me a BB King pick. He says “if you hurry you could catch him at his hotel” I haul over there and wait in the lobby. He comes through the door. I approach him and ask him to sign my guitar. His bodyguard reaches into his jacket. BB says “he’s ok” He signs my guitar and asks if I went to the show? I told him I had to play.
He asks where? Told him I play shows at Buck Owens place. He said “tell Buck I am a big fan and sorry we could not record" The next weekend I tell Buck what BB said. He told me they were going to record together but could not line up their schedules. Buck said "if you see him again tell him I am a huge fan" A few months later I see BB again tell him what Buck said. He smiled real big then asked me how I got into BB King. I told him my mother said if I wanted to be a good guitar player learn BB king. He asked “where is your mother” I told him she was sick with diabetes. He asked if I had a cell phone. He called and she answered “Mary this is BB King” She screamed out loud! They talked for about 10 minutes. Buck Owens also called mom when dad passed. What a blessing to be in the presence of these wonderful men. . . .
