The Clock Tower of Cardiff Castle (1873) designed by #WilliamBurges for the young 3rd Marquess of Bute. The theme of the batchelor apartments within, was the passage of Time through an abundant world ; in which Love must be allowed to flourish. Burges wove together in the ornamentation; strands of mythology, alchemy, gemology, astrology and heraldry, to be read for pleasure and edification like an immersive book.
On the exterior, stand seven planetary gods holding attributes, housed in a starry colonnade with four clock faces.Their feet overhang pedestals inscribed with their Latin names and carved with the appropriate emblem of their astrological house.Gold rays form escarbuncles behind them, suggesting the light of precious stones and stars.Facing South, youthful Sol is dressed in a stellar tunic presenting the disc of a moustachioed sunburst, while standing on Leo. Mars god of war, in lion-armour holds a spear with a penant of 'dawn over battlements' and a Scorpio shield, his support is Aries.Their original colours and lavish gilding was recently reinstated.
Above are the shields of Bute ancestors, left to right ; Herbert, Crichton, Stuart, Montague and Windsor (the Welsh estates came through the Earls of Pembroke).
The blue and silver chequer is the 'fesse' of the Stuart arms. The upper windows belong to the Summer Smoking Room and its gallery and a turret houses a spiral stair. The roof is topped by a crocket-finial, surmounted by a strawberry-leaf coronet and the Crichton banner of a rampant lion.
Carved in isolation on the North side is an oak : badge of the Stuart Clan and symbol of the royal 'Stewart' bloodline. The leaf and acorn had been used as a Jacobite emblem.
On my lunchtime walk around the Cardiff, I came across this paintwork on the walls of one of the the tunnels near Cardiff Castle.
The background is painted black and the colours have been flicked all around.
Makes a nice change from the spray paint art dotted around the city and really stands out.
Another one from the backlog I seem to have accumulated.
Throw back to a few months ago when the sun was shining and the ducklings were out.
I was walking down near the bridge by Cardiff castle and was greeted by an other enthusiastic duckling who came to see if I had food and was quickly retrieved by its mother.
