I live on land that was inhabited by the Catawba and Cherokee people, as well as Cheraw to the north. ••• In the Cherokee language their name is pronounced “tsa-la-gi” and is spelled ᏣᎳᎩ. Growing up, we learned about the removal of the native Cherokee people by the government. Thousands of indigenous families were removed from their homes and forced to move west, however smaller groups hid in the mountains of WNC. The Cherokee nation in NC has many services and organizations designed to support Cherokee citizens. There are many resources to learn more about the Cherokee people. ••• I benefit from the removal of the Cherokee and other native peoples from WNC because it allowed the government to establish towns and cities where there were once native settlements. We all live on stolen land. Let’s remember that today. #indigenouspeoplesday#cherokeeindian#cheraw#catawbaindians
