#chicaregram @evolelizabeth // when i was younger, i never really understood what it meant to be afro-latina because i had never even heard of the term. from what my friends and i understood i was just a mixed "spanish" girl who was puertorican and dominican. from elementary onto highschool we were never taught about our descendants or why we speak the languages we do or why we have the features that we do. there's a reason why i was born with full lips, curly hair, and brown skin but i didn't know where it came from and i didn't realize it went MUCH DEEPER than just my mom, my dad, my grandma and my grandpa. I didn't know about my blackness because i was never educated on it in school or at home and in general my hispanic culture didn't accept it or embrace it so neither did i. how can i accept something i didn't know about? its not until growing up forces you to self educate, research and have a general curiosity about who you are that you get to understand where you come from. at 21 i can fully say i know who i am and being afro-latina is more to me than just a label. i'm partnering with @riverisland to share my story because knowing who you are is essential to self growth and self care. #labelsareforclothes#riverisland You can get this customizable t-shirt from @riverisland
