Freewriting or stream of consciousness writing is longhand, unfiltered, raw thoughts all poured out and onto the page.
Julia Cameron talks about this in her book, The Artist's Way.
She calls them "morning pages." Suggesting you write them in the morning.
I like doing it most mornings.
And sometimes in the evening.
I also like to use this as a warm up exercise before Write Like A MOFO sessions.
The whole point: get the gunk out of your head so you can move on with your day.
You may even have some surprising insights.
Thoughts you didn't know you had suddenly show up on the page.
I think that's pretty freaking cool.
