Today marks a year since the tragic murder of Heather Heyer and the beating of DeAndre Harris at the Charlottesville Nazi Rally AKA “Unite the Right.” Today has been peaceful and anti-nazi protesters came out in droves to dwarf the Nazi’s Unite the Right 2 rally in DC. I thank everyone who took the effort to protest and sit vigil today 🙏🏾✊🏾🌈 I’m learning that the people in my community, some of whom I love and considered like family, are so blinded by ignorance that they are in fact racists. Sure they’ve made efforts to keep this under wraps and none of the people I know who support Trump would partake in a Nazi rally but if you peel back their fears you will find deep seeded racism and under a DT administration it can now fly a bit freer. Not one “friend” of mine was willing to have a tough conversation about racism with me and I heard a gamut of excuses from “all lives matter” to “send the Mexican criminals packing.” Living behind the Orange Curtain I grew up with so many conservative kids that it was survival for me to give passes for ignorant slurs or just skewed political views but only now do I truly understand who the people are that I grew up with. They are racists. And I’m done giving out passes, cutting slack, or ignoring this reality. I’ve lost a lot of friends this year but I’m glad I see the truth now. I’m not sure how to handle the division in this country. I know some people are finding ways to reach across the divide. But I feel like I’ve done that my whole life. Now those folks are welcome to reach towards me but I’m holding the line. It is one of the most important things in society to not allow for Nazi mentality to rise. Everyone who buys into DT’s racist, nationalist policies needs to feel the social pressure - this behavior is unacceptable. #fucknazis#fuckracisim#fuckfascists#fuckunitetheright#unitetheright#antifa#dc#charlottesville#heatherheyer#deandreharris#fucktrump#andrememberkillhitler#killhitler#powertothepeople#blacklivesmatter#peace
Rest in Peace #heatherheyer 🙏🏼 #charlottesville seems like it was so long ago. I remember watching the events unfold ... feeling so much rage. This was not a #spontaneous demonstration in response to a state sanctioned murder ... They knew for more than a week it was happening. I remember after the murder of #keithlamontscott so many people here in #charlottenc being arrested for merely breathing, people arrested and charged with inciting riots, for carrying gas masks ... for merely showing up and speaking out ... I saw it with my own eyes ... THEN to see these self proclaimed white supremacists marching in the streets with damn torches and/or #serious military gear and weaponry ... And for that to be *okay* ... What were they protesting? What right of theirs was being infringed upon? Just thinking about it a year later is even more infuriating. The whole thing was so ludicrous. And then add to that the beating of #deandreharris and the murder of Heather Heyer ... This country is too much sometimes 😔
A year ago today this video jumped out at me as I scrolled through social media. I was sick. It depicts #DeAndreHarris being surrounded and pummeled by bigots wielding metal pipes, 4x4 and other improvised weapons. I later discovered another video showing the crowd of men after they attacked DeAndre celebrating the assault while walking past uniformed and unflinching police officers. “We stomped that nigger!” “It was glorious!” Shortly afterwards I got a call from DeAndre’s mom Felica and took the next flight out.
The assault on DeAndre was infuriating. The institutional endorsement of his attack was even more bewildering. No arrest were made. None. Over the next few days these men got on planes and traveled back to wherever the hell they came from. Defenses were made for them, in their absence, on social media, by Charlottesville prosecutors and as high up as the presidency. DeAndre, a twenty-year-old assistant school teacher, was to blame. He was antifa (till this day DeAndre couldn’t tell you what antifa is). He was a thug (DeAndre had no criminal record period— he later accepted a plea on gun related charges after he was caught carry weapons in response to constant threats ob his life). He was himself charged with assaulting a white supremacist— the only independent arrest made by #Charlottesville PD relating to the attack. Though he was later found not guilty of any form of assault at trial. His assailants had to be painstakingly hunted down by a team of internet sleuths led by @shaunking . At least two still remain at large.
Watch this clip. Let the images sink in. Your children will watch them one day and ask where were you? This is the America we live in today and it is in a state of emergency as dire and treacherous as the height of Jim Crow and the Nadir period. We must constantly resist.
Today is the one-year anniversary of the #UniteTheRight rally in #Charlottesville, during which a group of Nazis brutally attacked a young black school teacher named #DeAndreHarris. Our photographer, Zach D Roberts witnessed the event, and continued to shoot — even as a white militant raised a 9mm pistol to his face. A year on, all the Nazis you see in this photo except one are in prison. We will get that one — and the ones you don't see, the ones with the real power.

(See previous post re Ketchazo Paho) (Swipe* --- Regrann from @leemerrittesq - #KetchPaho’s attacker #MaximSmith has been released from jail and placed on house arrest pending trial. Maxim attacked Paho August 6th with a blunt metal object (bicycle U-lock) causing severe blunt trauma to his head requiring 18 staples. Prior to and during the unprovoked attack Maxim repeatedly hurled racial slurs at Mr. Paho. The DA is now considering filing hate crime charges against the cyclist. ————————————
Maxim may claim some Puerto Rican heritage. It is anticipated this will be offered to deny racist motives for the attack. Last year Georgian racist Michael Ramos claimed similar Puerto Rican heritage obfuscated him of racism after he bludgeoned #DeAndreHarris with an improvised weapon in Charlottesville. Let’s be clear. Maxim is a bigot because he instigated a violent assault against a black man while hurling racial slurs. We don’t give a damn what region his racism claims it’s heritage from. - #regrann
Last summer on August 12, hundreds of white supremacists gathered in Charlottesville, Virginia for a rally that lead to the brutal beating of Deandre Harris and the tragic death of counter-protester and ally, Heather Heyer. This year on the anniversary of the rally, Virginia is under a state of emergency. The governor of Virginia, Ralph Northam, urges residents to “make alternative plans to engaging with demonstrations of hate.” For more on this, head to TheGrio.com.
