Custody / Jusqu'à la garde - Xavier Legrand
SATURDAY'S 2018 GREATEST MOVIES ---
One movie a day. Each day, a different theme. Saturdays will be for the greatest movies released in France in 2018.
My favourite movie of the year so far. Yes! I like it more than Infinity War or Call Me By Your Name (released in France in 2018). This movie is a shock! The suspense is building up until an nerve-wracking conclusion. As I don't want to spoil it, I'll just say that at the start we're at a Family Court Judge office, witnessing a couple and their lawyers in a divorce settlement. The soon-to-be former husband (Antoine) and wife (Miriam) are on the edge. The Judge reads a letter by one of their children, their 10-year-old son, Julien. It then skips ahead, after the settlement is done, and we follow the child being alternatively with his mum and his dad.
This is Xavier Legrand's 1st motion picture but his mastery at handling a sense of claustrophobia, even in a very open and public space is impressive. He's able to show how public and private spaces can fade away, making real one of the key concepts of feminism, set out since the late 60s.
But it's not an intellectual movie. It's full of life and emotions. The acting is in great part responsible for that. Thomas Gloria, who plays Julien, is as good as Jacob Tremblay in Room and the way his eyes move and convey emotions will have you tensed. Léa Drucker and Denis Menochet play the divorcing couple full of nuances and energy, screaming, weeping and going through all the array of human emotions.
One of the highlights : a party. The music is blaring, you can't hear anybody's voice and yet are able to understand what is going on through great acting and directing. A real tour-de-force!
This whole movie actually is. It will make you cry! A movie you must absolutely see! Best movie of 2018, so far.
JUSQU’À LA GARDE
※ Xavier Legrand
※ Avec : Léa Drucker, Denis Ménochet, Thomas Gioria...
※ Drame - Thriller
※ Date de sortie : 7 Février 2018
※ Synopsis :

Both French films I've seen this year have thoroughly fucked my shit up, albeit in very different ways.
Custody is one HELL of a directorial debut from Xavier Legrand. It's a story of an 11 year old kid named Julien stuck in the middle of a custody battle between his mother and father. That's all you need to know going in. This is incredibly effective for a couple reasons, the most important being the focus on Julien, and how it all effects him. So many of these movies focus everything on the parents, but this really digs deep into the damage, fear and sadness these scenarios create for the young kids stuck in them. I don't think I've ever seen a film better portray that feeling of terror a kid feels when stuck with an abusive parent, and the powerlessness. It is astoundingly real. Thomas Gioria did a brilliant job in the role, along with Denis Menochet and Lea Drucker as his parents. This film is anxiety-inducing, incredibly difficult to watch, and the final 20 minutes had me shaking, on the verge of tears.
This is the scariest movie of 2018. (4.5/5)
Ortak vesayet altındaki Julien, annesinin şiddete meyilli olarak yansıttığı babasıyla aşırı korumacı annesi arasında kalınca durumu kontrol altına almaya karar verir -- A broken marriage leads to a bitter custody battle with an embattled son at the centre.
Today I checked out the French drama Custody. On paper, this sounds like a typical Lifetime channel movie of an abusive dad who wants to see his kids. In execution, Xavier Legrand decided to approach the story with a touch of restraint and humanism. There is always subtle tension whenever Denis Ménochet appears on screen. If there is one complaint, I personally think it should've ended where it began and it could've went into a horribly bleak direction. Currently out on demand.
