Rick Rickerson is in charge of the machining lab at Purdue’s Northwest Indiana campus in Hammond. On this week's #SWARFcast#podcast, he talks about why he loves his job, which he has been doing for 14 years. Rick helps students stay engaged and interested using hands on projects, including building racing buggies for competition every year. “It’s all about students” he says. His passion for teaching beams throughout the interview.
Discover more about Rick's efforts to get students interested in #Machining, and teach them valuable skills that they wouldn't find in an engineering course. Tune in to our talk with Rick by clicking the link in our profile, or visit todaysmachiningworld.com.
Let's talk about dancing horses. Dancing horses are most commonly seen at charrerias, or Mexican based rodeos. They have lots of different sports showcased there, including dancing horses. Dancing horses are horses who basically are trained to piaffe in place. Dancing horses don't always move around, as they are taught to "dance" in place as well. Let's break down what a piaffe is, before we go into how they train a piaffe in place. Piaffe, the trot in place (with a clear diagonal rhythm), differs from all other dressage movements in that the horse carries more weight with his hind legs (maintaining a fairly strong hock flexion) while providing the upward thrust with his forelegs. In all other dressage movements, with the possible exception of the canter pirouette, the horse carries more weight with his forelegs while using his hind legs for propulsion. Piaffe itself is just trotting "in place" with barely any forward momentum. Piaffe is taught slowly and overtime. First to properly teach, get some really nice sharp, well framed and well-engaged halts, followed by collected trot departs. Then, reduce the amount of strides between halts and shorten the duration of the halt very progressively and tactfully.
Give particular attention to the horse’s straightness and relaxation. Also watch closely how quick the horse is to comply.
When the horse does all that with ease, reduce the amount of trot strides again, until the horse starts to Piaffe, while still going forward slightly.
Then, tactfully proceed the same way from a rein back, with no jolting and no roughness.
At the same time, also work with great precision on shortening the trot stride.
When the horse is at ease in a slow and relaxed cadence, (close to the “School Trot”) slow down for several strides by using your chest to make yourself taller and by sitting deeper.
If you do not loose impulsion your horse will shorten his stride and it will gain in height.
Be satisfied with just 2 or 3 strides almost on the spot, and then let your horse go forward again, smoothly and without changing his balance.
This exercise must never be asked for with strength, but only by playing with the balance of the horse.
I am so happy today because we had some real positive conversation with my lovely friend, Sharon Masuma, early this morning.I'm exited to share with you
I am so happy to see how girls can be aware about themselves and how they can learn to do anything they want.
My friend,Sharon, is such a one ,bold lady, among those who are aware in life and know what they want to do with their life.
It was so powerful to hear her explain the importance of school in her life to support what she want to do in life. And, hearing her story on how she literally didn't know much about computers and how quick she has learnt to operate computers and now offering computer lessons, early this year, shows the level of determination and awareness she's got to do what it takes to succeed.
On the other hand,I'm so grateful she gave me time to share with her that we need to figure out who we are, what we want to do in life and then see if it is necessary for us to go to school or not.We need to learn to do what matters. If we go to school then let it be because our goals and dreams need us to go to school to be accomplished not because everyone has to go to school.
It's okay if our dreams can be accomplished by not going to school.
And it's okay to go to school to accomplish our dreams.
What we want we do!
What matters in your life?
Let's learn together
