Finding a perch for the night as the sun sets, the deadly claw - chested egret sits and waits for the foolish photographer to approach a little closer, before pouncing like it's ancient cousin...the velociraptor (*this is not really true - it's Monday morning and I haven't had my coffee yet**)
Sagittarius serpentarius - The hunter of snakes. .
This is probably my favourite post, I have always wanted to see a secetary bird close up, so when I heard they were being spotted at Rietvlei nature reserve, we went searching early on Saturday, the conditions were terrible - cloudy and cold and I was not hopeful however, while watching a Korhaan, I noticed this magnificent hunter walking through the veld 20m from us. To put it plainly, I lost my shit.
He then proceeded to fight off some troublesome plovers giving us a full display of aerial acrobatics and flaying legs, eventually taking a run up and flying off.
This was easily my favourite encounter to date even though I didn't get the photo I wanted.
Thanks @serishagovender for braving the cold and getting one of our coolest stories to date. It was worth getting a flat tyre next to some rhinos.
