'Humari attariya pe' by Mallika-e-ghazal, Begum Akhtar. .
This song belongs to the Dadra tradition of Hindustani classical music. The interesting thing about Hindustani classical music is that the boundaries between languages seem to blur; Awadhi, Braj Bhasha, Urdu, Hindi and Bundelkhandi all seem to to be interspersed and haunt these languorous songs by their presence or absence. Begum Akhtar, who was the shining star of Hindustani music, specialised in bringing out 'dard' (pain) in her songs. She made our musical heritage accessible to all Indians through radios. Countless Indians, belonging to all backgrounds, indulged their hearts in her moving songs on many sleepless nights. And God knows, so have I.
