The Garden by Shaan Patel , AA School Of Architecture
Pataphysics is used to comment on a rational way of thinking through humor by an absurd use of the same rationality applied to something unusual or strange. In a similar way The Garden of Albertopolis or Experiment Road is an institution formed on the model of a series of five experiments done on different kinds of plants to reveal their consciousness.
The Garden sets up scenarios that allow these strange plants to exhibit and exercise these qualities. The design for the five “experiments” are based on five theories of plant life that have been extensively researched but never been proven. The five gardens form an institution enclosed by a colonnade that is the main infrastructural piece. It acts as a theatre where the paths around the gardens at different levels are the places to view these strange worlds of plants.
Lilyfield House by RETALLACK THOMPSON
The conventional sequence of domestic spaces – bedrooms, living, kitchen, dining – are warped to fit this oddly shaped site in Lilyfield. Bedrooms and bathrooms occupy the existing home; living, dining and kitchen occupy a new large singular room that simply bends to makes sense of the site geometry.
The curve of the room tracks with the sun to maximise solar access and highlight the changing characteristics of light throughout the day. Interstitial spaces between the existing boundary walls and the curving room are flooded by the backyard garden. The experience from inside, through the continuous 15m long curving window is one of immersion in the now omnipresent garden.
Experiences in the large single living space are modulated by the differing garden views; some areas are shaded, dark and cool; others are bright, fragrant and warm. This small and simple addition to the existing family home seeks to facilitate as many differing sensory experiences in a single space as possible.
La Vida Es Una Verbena means “the life is a party” ✨✨✨!
The book is full of lovely illustrations, Jane Austen quotes and insights about the modern life. Lucía Be has a new book, No Me da la Vida and I can’t wait to get it!
