Mets Continue On--Defeat Cubs 4-1
Last night the #Mets once again overcame the frozen tundra that was #CitiField to defeat #Cubs ace #JakeArieta 4-1 on a masterful performance by #NoahSyndergaard to continue their Championship march.
Even though tension would remain until the final out in the 9th inning, in reality this game was over almost before it began. Pitching on only two days rest, Syndergaard mowed down the Cubs in the top of the first. In the bottom of the inning #CurtisGranderson led off with a single to right and came around to score on a booming double by #DavidWright over the centerfielder's head. Then #DanielMurphy added to his Mets postseason legend by blasting a homerun into the right field seats--his fifth homer of the playoffs! It was 3-0 Mets and the overflow crowd of almost 45,000, wearing gloves, scarves, woolen caps and wrapped in blankets to stave off the bone chilling temperature and swirling wind, rose as one to cheer Daniel Murphy's latest magical exploit. In the 2nd inning Curtis Granderson added to his heroics by leaping high and reaching over the rightfield wall to pull back a ball hit by the Cubs' #ChrisCoghlan and in the third Grandy walked, stole second, stole third and scored on a single by #YoenisCespedes to make it 4-0.
Syndergaard meanwhile was virtually unhittable giving up only one run while striking out nine before leaving with two outs in the sixth inning. #JonathanNiese, #AddisonReedand#TylerClippard then shut down the Cubs before turning it over to incomparable closer #JeurysFamilia in the top of the ninth. Once again Familia finished off the Cubs and fireworks blasted high into the cold dark of the night sky as Mets fans made their exit from Citi Field knowing their Mets were that much closer to winning it all.
