One of my favourite things to do, sitting at a log at Jericho Beach. No one knows me, no one even attempts to think to know me, I don’t know them and I’m consciously making their story up about anyone walking into my picture. Then I look down again, into an ancient world of thoughts ‘The I Ching’, an ancient Chinese divination text also known as ‘Book of Changes’. My book is translated into German. It’s a strange translation to keep it as close to the original. It’s evident how much distance lies between these two languages, cultures and then there is time. But still, the wisdom it holds is timeless and I can relate with my own experiences. I had no idea about its fame in business and politics. I must have got it somehow in my early twenties and on my last trip home I picked it up again.
The chapter ‘Begeisterung’ / ( Enthusiasm ) made me realise its power to this day, “Wer dieses Opfer ganz verstünde, der könnte die Welt regieren, als drehte sie sich auf seiner Hand.” / ( One who understands this sacrifice entirely, could be able to rule the world, as it would be spinning on his hand. ) Doesn’t that sound familiar?
