This past weekend, I did something I’ve never done before and ran a 10 mile race. A few years ago, a 5k seemed like a lot, I never would have dreamed of doing a 10 miler and being able to Run more than half without stopping to walk! I learned quite a few things while doing this race.
First, our bodies are capable of AMAZING things. We consistently doubt our abilities to do something when our bodies are so unbelievably strong and capable of almost any challenge we put in front of it.
Which leads me to number two, mind over matter. We can do anything as long our minds are focused on it, the minute we start doubting ourselves is the minute we think our body is failing us. At mile 6.5, My mind convinced me I needed to walk so I did. While walking I convinced myself that my body was done and the last 3.5 was going to be extremely tough, and so it was. I didn’t struggle at all the first 6.5, because my Mind was in it!
Third, I learned once again, I am An extremely competitive person. Which sucks because I am also more of a jogger than a runner😂. Watching people pass me on the course absolutely drives me nuts!! I have to talk myself down, like “look here little lady, you got a good pace going, if you speed up to pass that person, the lactic acid is going to build up too much and you won’t be able to finish, then they will just pass you again and it was for nothing.” The last thing I learned, is that while being competitive is great. The only person I can really compare myself to is myself. My training is different from the next person and all that really matters is improving my own fitness levels day by day.
I thought I really knew myself, until I decided to get healthy. You learn so much about yourself, inside and out, when you really get into your health. You learn what foods make you feel like poo and what foods make you feel energized(what works for Someone else probably won’t work for you). You learn your weaknesses, your strengths, how to push your limits, and what to avoid.
