Today I laid in a field of cleavers (which aren't so itchy when they are young) and contemplated my relationship with the plants and how they influence my experience in this world. I'm not going to share all of that here, but I do encourage you to go out and do the same! I also gathered some beloved local plants. Today in my basket I've got some cleavers, lemon balm, lots of violet flowers, goldenrod, mugwort, turkey tail mushrooms, solomon's seal root, and more. I couldn't be more thankful for the abundance that surrounds me, even in this super urban city of Atlanta 🌿
Take a sneak peek into last weekend’s Postpartum Doula Training. We had the honor to sit with @nayafirewater Naya Cheung Rice, a Licensed Acupuncturist whose training spans through a diverse amount of styles of acupuncture, herbal prescription, and energy medicine. She is certified in Acutonics, medical qi-gong, Usui Reiki, Kiso Method, Tui Na, and holds a Masters of Science in Oriental Medicine. She specializes in female health, prenatal and postpartum health, emotional balancing and release, pain management, and energy alignment. I could go on and on. She is a gem and our community is so fortunate to have her. Swipe to hear more as she dives into the magic that is mugwort and Moxibustion. 🙌🏽💗 p.s.
we are currently accepting applications for next years Postpartum Doula Training. Direct link to application in profile. 🌺
Watching the sunlight dwindle and drinking deeply of its rays like tea. This was the last of the wild mugwort harvested for the season.
It’s been a little quiet here lately, as my focus shifts to and fro. I am a wearer if many hats, you see, and too stubborn to take any of them off! Social media can be exhausting, as you all know. Sometimes I feel like walking on eggshells. Sometimes you just need a mental break! But important it is to share magic, and peer into the magic of others. Holiday season is upon us, and as much overwhelm as that can sometimes hold - my hands are excited to make for as many folks as I can. Because no matter how crazy it gets, wow, what a wave of thankfulness it brings. Thankful for the plants that have taught me so many things, for mentors in many forms, farmers of flowers, fleeting fiery fall, and the wonders of winter upon us.
Thursday, December 6th I’ll be leading a discussion on herbs for mental wellness and teaching what I know about folk methods of making tinctures and teas at @covetatelier . Link for registration is in my bio, and I don’t think it could come at a better time!
I will get through this intense day thanks to @pilotkombucha ‘s peach lavender #kombucha and cayenne tincture from my friend @sarah_krzanowski to help me stay focused and keep it real!!! Thanks to you both for this awesome medicine 💚🙏 dried #aster and #mugwort on the windshield for extra vibes ✨
~ 🌿 part 2 🌿 ~
In 2003, I began my apprenticeship in learning about plants. Apparently, many people had approached my teacher to learn about plant medicines. Every time, she said she would give the instructions to go to the Santa Barbara Botanical Gardens and take a class on native plant identification (because, you know, when you are wildcrafting your plant ID skills need to be extra on point - some of the greatest healers and dangerous poisons are so closely related that it’s hard to tell them apart). She also sent me to another local herbalist to go work in her garden, to show up and help her and learn from her. And, to go choose a plant, sit by it for a few months, come back and report (#mugwort). I happily did all those things, there was nothing else I could imagine doing. I felt invisible forces guiding me along and there was no way to go but forward. It was easy to show up, because it felt right to every cell in my body. I felt like a kid in a candy shop, and, grounded and familiar, all at the same time. So, I kept showing up, listening, learning - not just about plant medicine, but also about how to be a productive and useful community member... which included working in the kitchen at community events, feeding people, cleaning up, and the long but delicious hours, even multiple day sessions, of processing plants and medicine making (it’s a lot of work). And activism, lots of activism.
Gradually, I was granted the privilege of learning to work with plant medicines, and to relate to the non-human natural world in a mutually reciprocal, sacred way - the common sense way that she knows from the ancient instruction of her ancestors. I’m pretty sure we all had that common sense at whatever point we were traditional people on our ancestral homelands, you know, because we had to have that to survive... So I learned how to ask permission from a plant to harvest, and how to give back by giving proper offerings, and also by harvesting in a way that improves the overall health of a plant stand - this looks different with different plants. I learned how to harvest in a way that you shouldn’t know I was ever there... con’t ⤵️

✨After a collision with the dishwasher during the witching hour, my leg is thoroughly bruised and really painful to walk...I need this bath! In addition, the next three days are extremely jam packed between visiting my moms side of my family, Roberts family, and my dad’s side! I’m really excited to see everyone, but usually a few hours of social interaction is draining for me, let alone several days. Recharging and filling my cup as much as I can before the festivities begin!✨
We are ready for the Full Moon Mugwort Dreaming & Healing retreat this weekend on Dartmoor!! 25 of us from all over Europe will gather at the stunning Rill Estate to spend 3 days in ceremony with this magical plant, one of our main plant allies as plant spirit healers. 💚 We will be teaching lucid dreaming to become consciously awake in our dreams, mugwort transformational breathwork, plant communication, clairvoyance session, magical session and taking people deep into the inner world of Mugwort for realignment to their true selves. 💚 These plant diets are life-changing and we all need more magic in our lives!! 💚
MUGWORT = Ai Ye
Latin: Artemis Vulgaris
Artemis, Greek moon goddess, daughter of Zeus, protector of the wilderness, guardian of female reproduction
Vulgaris meaning ‘common’ or ‘of the people’
Universal in use among cultures and over centuries, from flavouring beer in medieval times to modern day research in cancer treatment as chemotherapy
And a standard in women’s health and gynecology
(Please seek advice before taking this herb during pregnancy/ breast feeding)
Eaten fresh in soups and stews, drunk as tea, or steeped in saké
Or, twisted into tiny cones and burned at acupuncture points, either directly onto the body or onto a slice of ginger/ mineral salt
This method, moxibustion, is often prescribed for breech presentation of babies in utero
According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, 75 percent of fetuses reversed positions after moxibustion of their mother’s pinky toes.
Mugwort is related to wormwood
Wormwood is the plant from which Absinthe is made
And while mugwort does not share the reported psychoactive effects with its cousin, it has a reputation in some circles for inducing high level lucid dreams and astral projection! 🚀
