Nēnē, or the Hawaiian Goose, is the rarest goose in the world and it’s only found in Hawaiʻi. Unfortunately, like many of Hawaiʻi’s native species, they are in danger of extinction and listed as vulnerable by the IUCN red list. I found this one on a lava field in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It was quite an exciting encounter. Notice the steam vents and orange smoke coming from the lava lake at Halemaʻmaʻu Crater on the right side of the picture!
