Wakasa , Fukui
Old Saba Highway was connecting Wakasa and Kyoto. Mackerel is called Saba in Japan.
People carried a lot of mackerels seasoned with salt from Wakasa to Kyoto at that time. When they arrived in Kyoto, the mackerels got well seasoned with salt!
Unno-juku, Tomi City, Nagano Prefecture. A post town which connected the Nakasendo Road (an ancient road connecting Tokyo to Kyoto) and the Hokkokudo Road (Sea of Japan route). It dates back to 1625! Unlike some other post towns (Magome and Tsumago) it doesn't get many tourists - I took this photo on a Sunday afternoon!
