Pillar of the Day: Be Peace⠀
Today be peaceful to yourself, your community and the world around you. It's amazing how much your perspective can change when you take a little time to breathe.⠀
A week ago I posted a macaco video and a lot of people asked for a tutorial. I usually teach these starting with a cartwheel and then reaching further and further back (if you search back I have a tutorial on my Instagram). I have also seen it taught by starting low and jumping around the side. I have been playing with these approaches with students and the problem I often face is that going over the top is completely different from going around the side.
So I have started teaching macaco starting with a valdez (which is a skill I used to do on the beam in gymnastics). It is similar to a back walkover but you start sitting on the floor.
Before you do this move a good bridge and a bridge kickover are required.
The idea is to think of this as going over backwards into a bridge. Rotate your base arm as much as you can and reach over as you push your hips up. Push down hard with your support arm and try to keep your shoulder above your hand.
When you go into a bridge get used to the idea of pivoting on your support hand, as this is what you need to do in the full move.
If you can do a bridge kickover a valdez starting on mats should be a piece of cake. Slowly lowering the mats until you are at the floor.
If your bridge sucks this is a good excuse to work at it. It's one of the best bodyweight movements out there.
In ashtanga we do the same practice every day. So sometimes it's nice to #explore other poses. See where your body can go, what #movement feels good. And in this pose, I could not go any further without my shoulders saying riks raks poks 🙈

“Sometimes life is gray and cloudy and sometimes it’s a rainbow of color.” ... like when you’re doing a backbend on a massive rainbow net that’s rigged hundreds of feet up in a canyon, like @leileinoone is here. Yes, that’s pretty colorful!
