Background Story- I got a vague and incomplete outline of Predator over a year and a half ago, homie tattoo style. I ended up getting a muscle tissue infection in that area and was hospitalized for 3.5 weeks, due to my IV/IM heroin use (not related in any way to the tattoo, solely due to my habit). The outline sat untouched for quite some time. Fast forward to yesterday, when I have almost 1 year clean and am finally getting a professional-in-a-real-shop tattoo. I am so grateful for this experience and to be able to do this for myself. Fucking rad. I am so happy to have found an artist and a shop that I like. Would mos def recommend.
The Predator is written and directed by Shane Black and stars Boyd Holbrook, Olivia Munn, and Sterling K. Brown as a group of ex-soldiers, along with the help of a geneticist, must stop a group of Predators taking over the world. So overall, I'm going to say this right off, this was not as bad as some are saying it is. It's for sure not as good as it could have been, but for those who are touting this as the ruining of a franchise, that is just not the case here, at least from my perspective. Yes, this is a film that is much more in line with a Predator 2 than the first classic, but depending where you fall on that one, will likely determine your enjoyment of this film.
From a pure action standpoint, this movie has everything you could ask for. There are some really cool, violent, and not to mention brutal sequences in this film that could honestly put anything in the other films to shame. The amount of gore and brutality in this, almost borders on ridiculous at times, but also largely works and feels right in this world. I also thought most of the cast did a pretty good job in their roles and they had good chemistry together. Holbrook is no Arnold, but he's a solid action lead and I could definitely see more roles like this popping up for him in the future. Munn, who I'm usually not a fan of, was really good here and probably one of the only characters to wise crack and play up the campy vibes and not come off goofy or cartoony, which is my main criticism of the rest of them. .
And now that we're on to the critiques of the film, the most profound, is the horrendous dialogue between characters. Which is baffling to me, since it's Shane Black, but it essential turns the film into one big comedic joke, which would be ok, if it was smart and well written, but it's just dumb. I mean, you had Thomas Jane with tourettes and if you can make Keagan Key not funny, then you done messed up. I also really didn't like the family stuff with Boyd's kid and thought you could have cut that out entirely. Also wasn't a fan of hulk predator. Overall, I enjoyed this movie as a fine Predator sequel with some messy dialogue, but good action to make up for it.
