Eat to feed your microbiome, the commensal flora which inhabit our guts and elicits innumerable benefits for health, including:
✅ detoxification of xenobiotics 💀
✅ production of vitamins 💊
✅ instruction and entrainment of the immune system 🥊 ✅ modulation of mood and cognition 🧠
✅ digestion, absorption and assimilation of food substrates 🥕
✅ reinforcement of mucosal lining of the gastrointestinal tract 💪🏼
✅ competitive antagonism of pathogens 🐛
So why is a predominately plant-based diet associated with so many myriad health benefits?
In a single word: fiber. 🌱
A special type of fiber in particular is fuel for growth of our good gut bugs: prebiotics.
Also known as microbiota accessible carbohydrates (MACs), prebiotic foods contain indigestible plant matter that resists degradation by endogenous mechanisms and is instead is selectively fermented within the gastrointestinal tract by our gut inhabitants into short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs).
This is because human alimentary digestive enzymes are incapable of breaking down most complex carbohydrates and plant polysaccharides—so they escape digestion and reach the colon to be used preferentially by our gut flora.
Thus, inclusion of prebiotics will improve levels of SCFAs generated by the microbiome.
One SCFA, butyrate, is the preferred fuel source for epithelial cells lining the small intestine known as enterocytes, such that augmented levels of butyrate can heal intestinal hyper-permeability (leaky gut syndrome—the prerequisite to autoimmune disease).
Diet is one of the most important variables that shifts the composition and metabolic function of the gastrointestinal microbiota—which in turn favorably impacts immunostasis, or immune balance.
In fact, striking shifts in bacterial diversity and production of microbial derived fecal fermentative end products are observed in as few as 24 hours in humans who transition from an agrarian diet rich in fiber 🍓 (> 30 grams/day) to a fiber-devoid meat-based diet 🥩 (David et al., 2013).
By augmenting dietary diversity of plants we include, we can effect tangible changes that in turn favorably influence systemic health. 💁🏼♀️

She didn’t mind going to mommas favorite place to eat today, (she’s a picky eater)
Strawberry freeze and cinnamon twists won her over for sure!
Also, don’t judge because I said it was my favorite place to eat. I’m almost 11 weeks pregnant and this child in my womb hates literally everything besides Taco Bell, watermelon and chicken noodle soup.. any guesses on what I might be carrying?
Who else is taking advantage of the FREE Johnson’s and Johnson’s wipes deal I posted earlier today? If you don’t know what I’m talking about please scroll back for deals! Thanks @fullpricephobic and @whitneyraegan for sharing. Go get your free wipes y’all

💕 The Nest Collective Range is all about using products that support the body to heal naturally given it has the time and are made lovingly by hand in small batches.
💕 Postpartum (after birth) care is something that I am so passionate about as I believe the healing process during this time will set your body up for the rest of your life. It is not something that should be rushed or put aside and these products as an adjunct to treatment and rest, will help assist in nurturing a mother’s body during this amazing stage in her life.
💕 Come back this week to see the collective range.
You have to put the work in to discover the rewards. 💪🏼
There’s no point in attending birth education classes if you’re not going to put the lessons into practice and do the work. I hear all of the excuses and they all come from fear. I get it - birth can seem really scary if you’ve never done it before, but if you seek the right education, surround yourself with the right people and trust your body then your setting yourself up for success. “Going with the flow” only works if you have done the work up front. Birth isn’t something you just “wing”. #Repost @gentlebirthofficial
Birth professionals - YOU get this!
Imagine you want to learn how to play tennis. It’s your first time. You buy some books recommended by friends, you study the pictures and diagrams, you learn tennis terminology and watch some YouTube videos. You think about hiring a tennis coach but decide against it. Surely it can’t be that hard! 🎾
You now have a lot of information on playing tennis. You know what the game looks like, the rules, the serve, the volley. Can you actually play the sport? Not really. Can you go out and execute any of the high level skills needed to play this sport? No. All you have is a lot of information. This is how most parents prepare for birth and much of that information goes out the window when labor starts. GentleBirth is different. 🎾
Knowing the information for a positive birth isn’t enough. If a particular birth experience is important to you reaching that goal takes action. Attending a class or reading the book helps of course but it’s what you do with that information that really counts. Most parents think the hospital class is enough - but you’re not ‘most’ parents! You’re the parents who are stacking the odds in your favor of having the best birth possible. You’re the parents going that extra mile to give your baby the gentlest and safest arrival into this world. You’re the parents who won’t have a rude awakening when you arrive to your hospital and realize that you and your care provider are definitely not on the same page. You’re the parents who asked the right questions and got meaningful answers.. #doula#pregnancy
