Why Cloud 9 Picked Up An NA Team Over EU:
After C9 announced their Beastcoast roster acquisition, there was some uproar about two notable orgless EU rosters, IDK and ex-1UP, that folks thought should have been picked up over BC.
If I was Jack.C9 and I was selecting a roster, I would ask myself “Why invest in a region that, on paper, only has one LAN spot per season?” Historically, EU’s competitive landscape is skewed towards Penta meaning that, again on paper, only one spot is available for LAN. NA is a little more flat when it comes to competition and BC is a smaller org that would be ecstatic with a buyout from a tier 1 org. Money talks and with Penta being the on paper favorite, it would be higher risk to invest in an EU team vs buying out a smaller NA team who has a better chance of making LAN, statistically. This ignores the fact that C9 identifies as an NA org who are typically the crowd’s favorite underdogs, which is very much who BC is as a team.
Now with most of the more well known rosters taking up both NA and LATAM, other T1 orgs (Optic, EnvyUS, Luminosity, G2, etc) or regional T1/T2 teams (Astralis, Dignitas, NaVi, TSM, etc) will be looking towards EU. Unfortunately, these teams missed out on acquiring certain golden egg teams that are low risk/high reward and will have to pay for it.
