#throwback Sunday reading on #ArtBreath (image 2015) wrote on how #globalisation, #society may impact us, our #attire & thus our #identities . Since article published, has been a #political backlash 2 globalisation, yet #technology & the flow of information through #wires have not stopped. Many of us yearn & need 2 stay closer together in hope for a peaceful world.
In regards 2 how we each choose 2 communicate 2 the world through our #clothing ;though #individuality is fighting strong, could #globalised fashion b #cloning our #identity ? Or not?
Zygmunt Bauman has stressed in his book #LiquidModernity “we are all being ‘globalized’”(1998:p1).
#Fashion is an enabler as a means of #communication ,it helps state & express 2 others not just who we r, but whom we think we r at a particular moment in time in our lives. #Historical reference & context of clothing helps explain much, & yet “the historical trend has been followed, by in large, by the #psychological trend. The term of reference here is no longer the spirit or style of a period, but the psyche of the person wearing the clothing” (Barthes:1993;2004; translated:Stafford:2013:p24). A point 2 consider towards our perceptions on fashion & how we react towards it. Furthermore upon reading Roland Barthes’s study on language of fashion, we come across, his appraisal of Flügel’s work, who “[...]used the lexicon of #Freudian#symbols to describe human clothing as the ambiguous expression, both mask and advertisement, of the unconscious self.” (Barthes1993;2004;translated:Stafford:2013:p31 Bloomsbury).
I wonder what my unconscious self was saying throughout the years...And my fashion has usually #reflected how I wanted 2 #express myself at a particular time, that’s not to say that #culture & #surroundings did not impact or influence. They of course did. Thus fashion travels as a #softpower rendering it on occasions a political tool without us always knowing it. Whatever the case, it is interesting 2 go behind the #fabric but at the end of the day it is about wear what you feel like because it is one of the best ways to express ourselves & voice our thoughts visually.
