Best picnic spot. Best picnic companions. I’m thankful for these women and the depth of their hearts! And apparently we looked so cute here that a lady walking by just had to stop and offer to take our picture!
Not only was it a beautiful day getting paid to be outside on San Juan Island; not only did I eat local ice cream and rhubarb croissants, visit the farmers market, got to listen to amazing musicians, and refilled on my share of salty shores, Madrona, & wildflowers; I found a baby fox who didn’t mind me hanging out next to it, so close I wanted to pet it. I think these islands are close to heaven. This video right here is like the highlight of my year - a culmination of hard work, gentle spirit, curiosity, care, and determination. I would wait in traffic and ferry lines contentedly for days like this. It makes me so thankful to know there are some places still considered sacred and safe. 🙏
[2018 Race 5/12] San Juan Half Marathon
Race Jam: “Into The Wild” by Jon Krakauer (I accidentally only downloaded the first section of the book. When that ended I was in I was in a no cell service zone and had to finish the race to the sound of my own thoughts 🙄) Peak: What an amazing race!! Heidi and I signed up for this race earlier in the year, not thinking about how time consuming it is to get to San Juan. We ended up making a weekend trip out of it and brought out boos along. We have had such a fun mini-cation that was matched by a super fun race! I am lucky enough to live in the Pacific Northwest and run beautiful courses all the time, but running on San Juan Island was AMAZING. We ran through rolling pastures, over bluffs, overlooking beaches. It was perfect. The weather was sunny but cool. There was not a thing I would change about this race!
Pit: The course was consistent rolling hills and I felt really strong running up them. At mile nine the compounded affect of those hills became apparent and my muscles were hurting. I adjusted to walking up the hills and running the downhill. Despite the delay that caused, I only finished 3 minutes behind a PR I set on a completely flat course! Super happy with my time and feeling so strong! .
