The other day I stopped into the imposingly beautiful @viaductec1 to escape the beating sun and quench my fur-st. Opened in 1869 the Tavern was built to commemorate the completion of the Holborn Viaduct. The interior is over the top opulent with a beautiful pressed metal roof, original carved woodwork and three beautiful paintings of female humans running along the wall said to represent banking, agriculture and the arts. The pub is actually one of the last remaining examples of a 19th century London Gin Palace which explains this internal extravagance. Supposedly the pub was also built on the on the site of the old Newgate Prison and, after a little tail wagging and eye fluttering, I was lucky enough to get a tour of the cellar which still has many of the supposedly original metal cells. These days the cells are filled with bottles and kegs resembling an 1800s alcoholic prisoner's wet dream! This is a @fullers pub so the usual well-kept suspects are on draft with the addition of a few guest ales such as the ever satisfying @beavertownbeer Gamma. What really stands out for me about the Viaduct though is the staff. I am sure they have to deal with plenty of headaches when the clock strikes 5 and they're bombarded by suits hit the bar, but they great everyone with a smile. If you haven't been, go. If you've been before, go again. I will!
