Repost: Columbia Doto
It’s easy to overlook this tiny, inconspicuous nudibranch with its muted colors, readily lost among the branches of the brown hydroid (Aglaophenia spp.) on which it’s found. But once isolated and magnified, the animal becomes an exquisite glass figurine, minutely detailed. Its head bears a pair of antennae called rhinophores, used in smelling, and its back is decorated with club-shaped appendages whose function is poorly understood. As with many small nudibranchs that feed on colonial organisms, habitat and food are one and the same for this species: It lives, feeds, and lays its eggs on the hydroid.
