Back to the old days...
Only 93 years ago, in 1925 Cairo was awarded the world's cleanest capital. Today, this city's beauty has sunk in garbage piles. Since the 1950s garbage in Cairo has been collected by zabbaleen. It was the only way of cleaning the city till the mid 90s. In 2003 the EgyptIan government signed contracts with several foreign companies specialized in garbage collection. However, the amount of trash in Cairo's streets only increased.
The trash bins installed by the government were stolen after a while, but the habits of throwing the trash around remained. Nowadays, the areas where garbage collection is managed by the government, it is collected only once in two weeks. Meanwhile, much of the “uncollected” waste is dumped into rivers, canals and the streets, which leads to widespread contamination. Most of the generated municipal solid waste ends up in open public and random dumpsites, causing a serious threat to public health and the environment.
Unfortunately not a lot of Cairo's residents realize that they can solve this problem by themselves. It's all in our heads. Cleaning up Egypt will not change anything if we do not change the way we treat our planet and its natural resources.
What can you do right now?
1️⃣First of all, stop littering in the streets. Find a garbage bin. If you can't find any, take this garbage home. It's your trash and your responsibility.
2️⃣Make sure your garbage is collected by zabbaleen. They recycle 85% to 92% of waste, which is even more than in Europe.
3️⃣In order to help zabbaleen, separate your organic waste (food scraps) from inorganic waste (plastic, glass and paper).
If your waste is not collected by zabbaleen, sort it and let one of the recycling companies collect it. This way you will keep your city cleaner.
4️⃣Try to live zero waste lifestyle. Use only what you need and repurpose things that you already have.
This is a sequence from @nivhalpern 's part in the new @streettrashlosersclub video "SLIMEBAGS" and it's one of the best video parts I have EVER seen, if you haven't heard of the Israeli Incinirator yet... after July 4th you won't be able to forget him. #streettrash#slimebags#streettrashlosersclub
