Flashback to slurping my way through a super nice tea and food pairing class (yes you need to slurp to taste it well, preferably with a spoon and with much noise 😉). It was a whole new world of tea sommelier basics that opened, followed by all kinds of cool combinations of types of tea and delicious dishes. Instead of wine, most teas clean your palate. So the coolest thing to discover was that after every sip, you sort of start tasting the dish as if it’s your first bite. This mornings breakfast pairing. • Casa Breakfast with boiled eggs on sourdough.
Pairing tea and food is a relatively new concept in the west (with substantial meals that is) . Just as a good wine enhances the flavour of a paired dish so too does tea.
Because there is no ethanol in tea the flavour profiles can be far more complex than wine or even coffee. Although these may seem subtle initially the more often you drink tea and begin to develop your flavour library the more you will understand and intuitively begin to grasp the concept of tea and food pairing.
If done well, the right tea can truly enhance the taste of the food on your plate. Equally, get the pairing wrong, and the tea can be overwhelmed by the food (or the food drowned by robust tea).
Start simple like eggs on toast and your favourite breakfast blend. Playing around with this concept is so much fun, and it will open up a whole new world of tastes and flavours to you😋.
