“Life very rarely ever gives us what we expect”
7 years ago, I entered my freshman year of college at the University of Kentucky, expecting to graduate with a degree in Biology, and on my way to medical school to become a pediatric neurosurgeon. I expected to be healthy. Things definitely didn’t go as planned!
Over the course of 7 years, I was diagnosed with various illnesses and conditions. Some I was born with, others simply progressed to be more noticeable, and others I acquired. I fought against this with everything I had. I danced until a back and hip injury forced me to quit. I took a job at a hospital until the pain became so severe I needed heavy pain killers every night when I came home. I rode horses until I was told continuing to do so would paralyze me. I fought until I realized I simply had to accept my reality. I am not healthy.
This does not make me broken. This does not make me less than whole. I can only ever be myself, and I AM that everyday. I am a person who fights against more than my “fair share,” but I am learning to see the beauty in that struggle. I am learning to find meaning in the battles I face, and realize that just because the goals and dreams change, just because I will have to accomplish them a different way, and take longer to do so, doesn’t make me less worthy or less deserving. It doesn’t make me less capable. It doesn’t make me weak. I have nothing to be ashamed of with my illnesses. I have absolutely nothing to be guilty for. I didn’t choose this life, but I am absolutely 100% strong enough to live it. Here is to accepting myself, all of me, on two legs or two wheels, from now until forever, with 4 little paws right beside me along the way ❤️🐾
