A year ago today the results of the same sex plebiscite were announced...
I remember shaking and sobbing at my desk for the hour leading up to result. I was inconsolable, I genuinely believed it would be a no. After brexit and trump the same year, I had completely lost faith in public opinion and their ability to do the right thing.
The relief when we heard the words “61% in favour” was overwhelming. The previous months of anxiety, anger, hurt and genuine fear were almost over. The relief was short lived, as it sunk in that we still had to await the governments over ridding decision two weeks later on December 7th.
I still think the process was horribly unnecessary and incredibly damaging. By the end of it we were almost too exhausted to be happy. If there had been no public vote we would not have had to endure the hate of the no campaign. If the government had passed the law themselves, then we could have enjoyed the ignorant bliss of equality and inclusion without knowing that 4/10 people in this country still don’t want to afford us basic human rights - Millie x @humanrightscampaign
