I happened upon the World Press Photo 2018 exhibit at the Allen Lambert Galleria, Brookfield Place, yesterday, and was deeply affected by the photographs on display. The free exhibit features the 2018 contest winners and runs until October 23rd. If you're in town, I highly recommend checking it out.
I've created a Highlight section featuring some of the images I found particularly striking, but the general theme across all the images I saw is of a deeply wounded world. The photographs tell the story of America's current descent into fascism, the continued and growing refugee crisis around the world, and above all, the overwhelming, catastrophic consequences of climate change and our destruction of the environment. I found it impossible to leave with any sense of optimism, but I feel neither hopeless nor cynical. The exhibit is a reminder, above all, that photography can function both as testimony and chronicle. You become responsible, as a witness, to account for everything that you see. I have to believe that that counts for something.
Hamburger Steak 🤤
I’ve never even heard of that until I got into anime and manga, which has always presented it as a kids item often with a flag or sparklers in it. Since then, I’ve always wanted to try it. After checking out Nagoya Castle, @farah_kolar and I decided to grab some food. It was the perfect opportunity to visit Pepper Lunch. This is a Japanese chain that has locations all over Asia and Australia, and even in Western Canada! What’s “special” about this restaurant is that the food comes out on a hot plate at 300°C that’s meant to keep the food hot for the duration of the meal. It may seem like a marketing ploy but it’s quite practical. The hot plate also serves another purpose: you can cook your own steak to however you like it, right in front of you. The hamburger steak was well-seasoned and was very juicy and tender. It melts in your mouth just as you make contact, and their special steak butter and sauce make it quite addicting. If all burgers were made like this, I’d have an issue 😅 I ordered an extra helping of bean sprouts, a small glass of beer, and a soup to go with my meal. All that for about ¥1500, wasn’t bad at all. Just writing about this has been craving for another hamburger steak... @pepperlunchcanada should just hurry up and expand to Toronto 😛
In business, Be Your Customers’ Best Friend. In business, it’s about the Quality of your customers, not just the quantity.
The fact is treating customers like friends means more than good marketing. It’s even more than just good service. Treating customers like friends is hard work, just like real friendships.
In business, the common goal is to make money, so it is tempting to focus on that. But @lan_restaurant ,the best generalization about making money in the long run is that it comes from building great relationships with customers so they keep coming back for more, during good times and bad.
If you ask any successful person, whether in business or politics, you will hear over and over again, “It’s all about relationships” and, in business, relationships bring great value.
I love my customers, as we have the best customers @lan_restaurant .Do you want to know why??? I love my customers because I can talk to them for hours about their personal lives. It makes work @lan_restaurant not feel like work at all and that is just an AWESOME feeling! I love my customers because they love us back. I love my customers because they appreciate us so much! I love my customers because of how much of themselves they share with me. I get so many stories and photos from my best customers that invite me into their lives, it makes what I do @lan_restaurant feel so personal. As a small family business with very small marketing budget, I love my customers because word of mouth is powerful-and they do the marketing for us! Nothing makes me happier than being able to greet my customers by name. I TRULY think of my customers as extended family and love them for allowing me to build these kind of memorable relationships with them! Most importantly, I love my customers because we wouldn’t be here without them and their amazing support!!! My heartfelt thanks to my amazing customers @lan_restaurant Picture of me HOLDING and LOVING my best customer’s 3-month-old daughter @lan_restaurant (1 year ago)
Autumn riding is the most beautiful yet dangerous time to ride. Leaves on the road create slippery patches and your tires can’t warm up enough to get max traction. Ride safe! (But enjoy the views 🙂) #dainesecrew#bearacer#GoPro
