Night Train Murders (1974)
AKA: Night Train to Terror
AKA: Last Stop on the Night Train
AKA: A New Last House on the Left
AKA: Murders on the Late Night Train
Dir: Aldo Lado
Aldo Lado made a few very high-impact horror films in Italy during the 1970's. What makes his films stand out amongst the glut' of 1970's Italian Grindhouse is above all; style. Many genre films were shot on micro-budget, Lado's offerings were lavishly light, thought out, shot, and edited with skill regardless of budget.
Two young women decide to spend their Christmas with their families, and leave their busseling college town in Germany behind. Only they happen to hop aboard the same passager train that two extremely greasy low-lifes happen to hop on board. While innocently minding their own business in their own cabin, they are quickly held hostage, sexually and morally humilitaed and degraded, and brutally attacked over the course of a day. Fleeing the train, and their crimes on the train, the two savage criminals and a newly acquired female initiate end up crossing paths with one of young womens greiving parents. Revenge follows.
This is a powerhouse of the grindhouse genre. It is sleazy, nasty, gory, uncomfortable, and an extremely well made film. The fact Aldo Lado decided to tackle this project given his other giallo (Italian murder mysteries) is a bit of a shock. The violence here is truly unsettling, and not played for anything besides shock value. Artistic touches are superb here, as there is an expectly orchestrated score by Ennio Morricone that is timeless, the lighting shifts dramatically during different scenes which has tones of Argento's style, while the violence and storyline are obvious tips of the hat to Wes Craven's "The Last House on the Left". Except where "Last House" had you rooting for the gory satisfaction of the ending.... This just subjects the audience to audatious levels of punishment, and then suddenly ends. Brutal.... Should be far more famous amongst horror circles.
