Believe it or not, I actually thought long and hard about what I wanted to express when I marched at the anti-Trump rally in Edinburgh yesterday.
So far, I've avoided being overtly political on Instagram, not for fear of causing offense or chasing people away, but because I enjoyed having a space where I can post uncomplicated things; things that make me happy; things that might make you happy. Anyone who follows me elsewhere (twitter) or knows me irl knows that I'm not shy about making my politics clear.
That being said: EVERYTHING IS POLITICAL. Yes. Even the images I post on Instagram. Some (like these) more so than others. For example, I care deeply about our environment and I hope I manage to get that across in my work.
Back to yesterday's demo: there was an amazing turnout in Edinburgh, with people from all walks of life coming out to stand against the policies of the Trump administration - and to stand with the victims of those polices both in the US and around the world.
There were many messages carried on the day; calling out child separation; climate change denialism; police brutality; systemic racism; misogyny and rape culture; anti-trans bigotry and a whole host of very Scottish insults aimed at the big orange roaster himself.
In the end, I settled on something simple - something that reflected the unifying principle of the day: "Fuck Trump". Because if nothing else, we could all agree on the fact that Trump has enabled a rising tide of hatred and that together, we must speak out against it.
It's vulgar - but saying it is scientifically proven to relieve stress and hey, we live in vulgar times.
Peace, love and solidarity. ✌️🏳️🌈🏴🌹
196/365- “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.”
